I’ve just arrived at LinuxWorld San Francisco, one of my favorite conferences of the year. Although it’s still quite early (8:30am Pacific), the place is already buzzing with activity.
If you’re attending the show, swing by our booth (#1234; right next to the Novell Email garden) and say hi!

Last week I attended the
LinuxWorld Expo at Olympia, London, held across 25-26 October. It was a huge success, even by the high standards of previous shows. At the Apress booth we were rarely without visitors, and at times the exhibition hall resembled a busy marketplace, as people fought their way through the crowds. If anybody thought the Linux scene was slowly going tepid, they couldn’t have been more wrong. Purely on the basis of visitor numbers and atmosphere, I would say this year’s show was the best I’ve ever attended.

In an earlier post I mentioned two great places for lunch and beverages. Today I’d like to report yet another hidden gem, also located quite close to the Moscone center. It’s Shiki, a Japanese/Sushi restaurant found at 251 3rd St., just a short walk from the conference.
Apress author and Novell expert Sander van Vugt and I visited this place today on his recommendation. As it was to be the third day in a row he’d be there for lunch, and was already planning on returning again Thursday, I figured he was onto something. After just a few bites of my bento box, I may very well be joining him. All said, a surprisingly cheap yet excellent place to eat and chat. Check it out!

I’m sequestered in the press room this morning catching up on email and looking forward to what promises to be a great keynote address by Richard Wirt, a Senior Fellow at Intel. He’ll be talking about grid computing in enterprise environments, which surely will have some sort of Linux-related slant to it.
This afternoon Nationwide’s (whose HQ is right down the street from me in Columbus, Ohio) Chief Enterprise Architect Guru Vasudeva will be talking about how the company used virtualization and Linux to shave millions from its IT expenditure.
Recapping yesterday, the show was absolutely packed, one of the largest turnouts I’ve seen in perhaps the ten LinuxWorld conferences I’ve attended over the years. The Apress booth was swamped all day, not only did we give away quite a few t-shirts and books by way of our now infamous “wheel of fortune”, but we also capped the day with a random giveaway of a licensed Dilbert print.
All said, the show is rocking, and I hope to see you down here!

LinuxWorld San Francisco opens next week, running from August 14-17 and held in the downtown Moscone Center. This will be perhaps my tenth attendance of this event (at varying locations), and over the years it’s proven time and again to be one of the most fruitful opportunities to meet with fellow open source and Linux enthusiasts from around the globe.
The keynotes are always quite interesting, and this year is shaping up to be no different, with representatives from several industry titans (Intel, Nationwide, and Motorola among them) sharing stories regarding how they’re using Linux in the enterprise. Famed Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig is presenting the opening keynote, in what’s sure to be a fascinating talk on the notion of “free culture”.
The exhibit hall is open from August 15-17, and runs from 10am to 5pm on the first two days and from 10am to 4pm on the last. According to the conference website, over 200 exhibitors will be on hand, Apress included. If you’re planning on checking out the floor (highly recommended), note you can receive a free pass if you register prior to August 13th: Register here.
I’ll be hanging out in the Apress booth, and look forward to seeing you there!
