London Tech Days '07 - Groovy on Grails - 1 day Workshop

It’s pretty amazing how many open source Java projects are under way these days, indeed one could certainly argue the Java community’s interest in open source ultimately saved the Java language. This activity is particularly prominent in the web framework area, with Grails capturing the lion’s share of the buzz these days.

That said if you’re in the London area and are interested in learning more about Grails, consider attending a one-day workshop put on by Grails founder and Apress author Graeme Rocher. According to the website, Graeme’s going to cover quite a bit of ground.

And a special treat for attendees, James Gosling will be making an appearnce at the event!

I have a server with 4gigs of RAM and because of the way memory is addressed, I need to utilize PAE support in my kernel. So, obviously I build a custom kernel for this box that uses PAE. Everything runs great and I normally have no issues at all with this setup. Until today that is.

Break out the No-Doz: Sun open-sources Java SE

If Sun Microsystems’ announcement regarding the open-sourcing of Java SE is the philosophical tree in the woods, clearly nobody heard it fall. Quietly announced Monday in conjunction with the opening of Linuxworld, and apparently not even deemed worthy of a press release, the move is indicative of a significant reversal of course over previous corporate posturing.

One must speculate whether Sun read the writing on the wall, and made the move to stem what ultimately would have been increasing interest in the Apache Software Foundation’s Harmony project.

Rather ironically, today News.com published additional thoughts from a Sun representative regarding the move, stating it “won’t change coders’ lives”. It seems the announcement has had much less of an impact than that: nobody seemingly cares. The open source community clearly saved Java (think Spring, JBoss, Ant, and others), yet it seems this move will be viewed at least by those who use the language on a daily basis as rather irrelevant.
